Regional Cancer Network Formed

West Bend, Wis., (July 6, 2010) — St. Joseph's Hospital has announced its participation in the new Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Network, which will bring additional Medical College of Wisconsin cancer specialists to the West Bend area. The regional Cancer Network is designed to provide a consistent, high standard of care and enhance local access to Medical College cancer specialists.

In addition to St. Joseph's Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls has also joined the Cancer Network.

"Expanding our cancer care services is an exciting growth opportunity for St. Joseph’s Hospital and our service area," said Michael Laird, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Hospital. "Through the Cancer Network, we provide the most advanced, coordinated care for our patients and their families, right here in our community."

Medical College specialists including radiation oncologist Mark Macedon, MD, have been practicing since last summer at the Alyce and Elmore Kraemer Cancer Care Center of St. Joseph's Hospital. St. Joseph's Hospital physician Ijaz Arshad, MD, provides medical oncology services at the center. Medical College urologic oncologist Peter Langenstroer, MD, and Medical College plastic surgeon John LoGiudice, MD, have been available on the hospital campus since 2009 and will be joined in July by gynecologic oncologist William Bradley, MD. Additional Medical College cancer specialists will be added through the Cancer Network.

Care through the Cancer Network is provided in the community hospital setting whenever possible, and Medical College cancer specialists collaborate with community physicians to develop treatment plans and ensure continuity of care. If patients need specialized treatment, connections to the Froedtert & The Medical College Clinical Cancer Center are coordinated through the network. Patients can return home for follow-up care at their community hospital. Medical records are accessible electronically, so providers at any Cancer Network site can retrieve patient information quickly.

In addition to specialty care in their own community, cancer patients also have streamlined access to clinical trials, second opinions and an array of supportive services, including cancer genetic screening and counseling, cancer rehabilitation, nutrition counseling, social services and educational programs.

Patients can reach any Cancer Network site by calling a single phone number: 866-680-0505.

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Network delivers a coordinated system of high-quality cancer care anchored by the specialty expertise of Medical College of Wisconsin physicians and the extensive resources of an academic medical center.
